International Research Fellowship

The World to Udine and Udine in the World


CISM promotes international collaboration in mechanical sciences through its International Research Fellowships, welcoming scientists to its headquarters and to the city of Udine. 
The program is designed for researchers interested in developing joint projects in teams from different institutions, offering a unique opportunity to engage with CISM courses.

Fellows benefit from fully supported visits, including travel reimbursement and accommodation, while contributing to the international promotion of CISM’s scientific initiatives and the city’s high quality of life. Participants also gain the honorary title of Scientific Ambassador of the City of Udine, supporting a lasting connection with the center and its international network.

2026 Call for Applications

Interested scientists must submit, by January 18, 2026 (extended from the previous deadline of December 22, 2025), the following:

  • An extended abstract of their research project (max. 4 pages) containing title, composition of the research team, proposed methodologies, expected results, and essential bibliography;
  • the CV of each team member, indicating a single scientific article from their work that is particularly relevant to the proposed research project.

An international jury chaired by the Secretary General of CISM will evaluate the proposals and announce the winners of the call after March 22, 2026.

The winners will be reimbursed of travel expenses and provided with free accommodation in Udine for two weeks, under the conditions applied by the Center to its guests.

The winners of the call will commit to:

  • including the title of "Scientific Ambassador of the City of Udine" in their curriculum vitae;
  • participating in the "Proclamation of the Scientific Ambassadors of the City of Udine" ceremony;
  • contributing to the international promotion of CISM’s scientific activities and of the city of Udine, particularly with regard to quality of life and active citizenship;
  • being available to be appointed as jury members for awarding of the title in editions of the fellowship subsequent to the one in which they were awarded the title.
The 2026 Fellowship was awarded to:

  • Muhittin Mungan (Germany) and Damien Vandembroucq (France) for the project Self-organization and Memory in Driven Disordered Materials
  • Martin Kružík (Czech Republic) and Giuseppe Tomassetti (Italy) for the project Dimension Reduction for Magnetoelastic Composites: Rigorous Derivation of Rod Models via a Single-Field Formulation
The award ceremony will take place in Udine on June 11, 2026. More details will be provided soon.

The 2025 Fellowship was awarded to:

  • Eva Kanso (USA) and Pietro Cicuta (UK) for the project “From cells to organs: The Multiscale Physics of Fluid Transport in Ciliated Systems”
  • Henry Alston (France) and Luca Cocconi (Germany) for the project “Optimal control by noisy traps”

The award ceremony took place on May 8, 2025, in the historic setting of Torre Santa Maria at Palazzo Torriani in Udine.

The event brought together prominent representatives from local institutions and the academic community, including Mayor Alberto Felice De Toni; Councillor for Culture Federico Pirone; Rector of the University of Udine Roberto Pinton; SISSA Director Stefano Romanino; CISM President Mario Pezzetta; and Antonio De Simone, Secretary General of CISM and President of the Fellowship Jury.

The ceremony concluded with a concert by DUO Perfetto, dedicated to the music of José Bragato —Argentinian-Italian composer and cellist born in Udine—renowned for his contributions to both classical and tango repertoire, as well as for his collaborations with Astor Piazzolla.
