About Us
A unique institution within the European scientific landscape
The International Centre for Mechanical Sciences (CISM)
founded in Udine in 1968, is a unique institution within the European scientific landscape. Inspired by Professor Luigi Sobrero with the vision of uniting researchers beyond political and cultural barriers, it now stands as an international hub of excellence for exchange, research, and education in the field of mechanical sciences, spanning interdisciplinary areas such as robotics, biomechanics, environmental engineering, and other related disciplines (mathematics, computer science, artificial intelligence).
Its mission is to disseminate knowledge and foster innovation through an open science approach centered on collaboration, inclusion, and diversity. Each year, CISM organizes courses, advanced schools, and symposia that attract leading scientists from around the world, offering young researchers the opportunity to engage directly with outstanding academic and professional leaders. The International Scientific Council ensures the quality of the programs and guarantees an environment of free, interdisciplinary, and authoritative exchange.
Among CISM’s distinctive features are its high-level educational programs, which have attracted generations of scholars from across the globe, and its prestigious collaborations with universities and research institutes worldwide. Over 600 Springer volumes testify to the Center’s scientific output, which has often anticipated key research trends—from seismic modeling, developed in response to the 1976 Friuli earthquake, to today’s cutting-edge challenges in robotics, bioengineering, and materials science.
